YouTube thumbnail download in 3 steps
- Copy the link of the video, Short or live stream. In the YouTube app tap Share → Copy link.
- Paste it above and open the Thumbnails tab. All five sizes appear as previews, each with its exact width and height.

YouTube stores several copies of every thumbnail. Tube Snip shows each one and fetches it straight from YouTube's image server, so you get the original file, not a screenshot.

The 4:3 sizes have black bars above and below the 16:9 picture. For a clean image, take 1280×720 when it exists, or 320×180 for a small 16:9 preview.
Why is the HD 1280×720 thumbnail sometimes missing?
YouTube only makes the 1280×720 copy when the video was uploaded in at least 720p or the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail in HD. Older videos, very small uploads and some live streams don't have it. When it's missing, Tube Snip tells you, and the best size left is 640×480.
If you're making your own thumbnail, upload it bigger than that: YouTube now recommends custom thumbnails at 3840×2160 for videos (2160×3840 for Shorts). The largest copy YouTube serves for downloading is still 1280×720.

Safari saves the JPG to the Files app, in Downloads. To put it in Photos, open it in Files, tap Share → Save Image.
Android
Chrome saves it to Downloads, and it shows up in Google Photos and your gallery app under Downloads or Device folders.

Can I use someone else's YouTube thumbnail?
A thumbnail belongs to the channel that made it. Saving one to study or as a reference is common, and using it as the preview when you link to that video is normal. Re-using it in your own video, ad or product is not, unless it's yours, it's under a Creative Commons license, or the creator said yes. Why do some downloaders give me HD video with no sound?
In HD, YouTube serves picture and sound as two separate streams. Tube Snip downloads both and joins them, so every file in the Video tab plays with audio.
Can I paste just the video ID?
