How to turn a YouTube video into notes in 3 steps
- Copy the video link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy link) or the address bar.
- Paste it above, open the AI tab and choose Study notes. Pick the language you want them in under Answer in.
- Copy them into your notes app. Use Copy, Share or Save .txt. Headings, bullets and quotes keep their structure when you paste.
Study notes cost 5 credits. Without an account you get 3 free AI runs a day; a free account starts with 60 credits. The Study it button runs notes and the full transcript together, so you have both.
What the notes look like
| Section | What's in it |
|---|---|
| A heading per main topic | The video split into the parts a teacher would put on the board |
| Bullets under each heading | The points made, short, with the timestamp where each comes up |
| Key quotes | Two or three exact sentences worth remembering or citing |
| Action items | What the video tells you to do, as a checklist |
Notes are written only from what the video says. If the speaker didn't say it, it isn't in your notes, which matters when you revise for an exam from them.
YouTube to notes, a summary or a transcript?
- Notes (this page) are for learning and revising: structured, complete enough to study from.
- A summary is five points, for deciding whether a video is worth your time.
- A transcript is every word, for searching and quoting.
A good routine for a course: run the summary on each lesson, then notes on the ones you actually need to learn.
Where your notes go
iPhone and iPad
Copy and paste into Apple Notes, GoodNotes, Notion or OneNote. Share sends them straight to another app, and Save .txt keeps a file in the Files app.
Android
Copy into Google Keep, Notion, Obsidian or OneNote, or Share to the app you study in.
Windows, Mac and Chromebook
Paste into Notion, Obsidian, OneNote, Word or Google Docs. Headings and bullets come through as Markdown, which Notion and Obsidian format automatically.
How should you study with video notes?
- Watch first, then read. Notes make sense once you've seen the video at least at 1.5× speed.
- Turn each heading into a question and answer it without looking: "what are the three causes of inflation?".
- Click the timestamps you got wrong. Each one takes you to the exact moment, so you re-watch two minutes, not twenty.
- Use the action items as a checklist for tutorials: install, set up, try.
- Keep the quotes for essays, with the video title and the timestamp as the source. You can check any quote against YouTube's own transcript panel.
Notes in more than 50 languages
Pick a language under Answer in and the notes are written in it, whatever language the video is in. Key quotes stay in the speaker's own language, so a quote is always exactly what was said; the notes mention when that happens.
YouTube to notes: Tube Snip vs other tools
When we asked Google's AI Overview and Perplexity for the best tool to turn a YouTube video into notes in October 2026, NoteGPT, Google's notebook tool and Recall were among the tools they named. Each tool's facts below were checked on its own website on 19 October 2026.
| Tool | What it is | Price | Install | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tube Snip | Web app | 5 credits a set of notes: 3 free runs a day without an account, 60 credits with a free account | Nothing | Study notes with headings, key quotes and action items, each linked to its moment | Uses credits after the free runs |
| NoteGPT | Web app | Free, no login; paid plans | Nothing | Quick summaries and transcripts for many videos | Paid plan prices are not shown on its summarizer page |
| Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) | Google research notebook | Free tier (up to 50 sources) | Nothing | A whole course: many videos and PDFs in one notebook | Only public videos with captions |
| Recall | Web app, browser extensions and phone apps | Free plan with 10 AI summaries a month; Plus $10/month billed yearly | Optional extension | Linking notes from many videos into one knowledge graph | The free plan caps AI summaries each month |
Pick by situation. For one lecture you need to learn, Tube Snip. For a full course with readings, Gemini Notebook. For a growing personal library, Recall.
More tools for the same video
- Ask the video: type a question about the lecture and the answer cites the moment.
- Save the audio to revise on the move: YouTube to MP3.
- Download a whole course playlist: the playlist downloader.
- Keep the subtitle file: the subtitle downloader saves SRT, VTT or TXT.
Why notes fail, and the fix
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "This video has no captions" | No creator captions and no auto-captions | Notes need captions; try another upload of the lecture |
| Notes miss the end of a very long video | Very long transcripts are trimmed to a safe length | Split the work: run notes on each part of a course |
| A technical term is wrong | Auto-captions misheard it (their quality may vary) | Click the timestamp and correct it in your copy |
| "You have used today's 3 free runs" | The guest limit | Make a free account for 60 credits |
Who uses it
- University students turning recorded lectures into revision notes.
- Self-taught programmers keeping the steps from a tutorial as a checklist.
- Professionals taking notes from conference talks and webinars posted on YouTube.
- Podcast listeners saving the ideas from a long interview without re-listening.
The rules
Notes are for your own learning. Quote with credit to the video; sharing notes from your own or Creative Commons videos is fine, and for other videos keep them to personal study unless you have permission.
Questions about this tool
How do I turn a YouTube video into notes?
Paste the link, open the AI tab and choose Study notes. You get headings, bullets with timestamps, key quotes and action items.
Is it free?
You get 3 free AI runs a day without an account. Study notes cost 5 credits, and a free account starts with 60 credits.
What kind of videos work best?
Lectures, tutorials, courses, talks and podcasts: anything where someone explains things out loud.
Can I get notes in my own language?
Yes. Choose one of more than 50 languages under Answer in. Key quotes stay in the speaker's language so they remain exact.
Can I paste the notes into Notion or Obsidian?
Yes. The notes are plain Markdown, so headings and bullets format automatically when you paste.
Does it work without subtitles?
No. The tool reads the video's captions, creator-made or auto-generated. Videos with no captions cannot be read.
Are the notes accurate?
They use only what the video says. Check any number or name against the timestamp before an exam.
Before you download
Why do some downloaders give me HD video with no sound?
In HD, YouTube serves picture and sound as two separate streams. Tube Snip downloads both and joins them, so every file in the Video tab plays with audio.
Can I paste just the video ID?
Yes. Paste the 11 characters after v= and it works the same as a full link. Shorts links, youtu.be links, embed links and links with a start time all work too.
How do I share a video from the YouTube app?
Install Tube Snip from your browser menu ("Add to Home screen" or "Install app"). Then in the YouTube app tap Share and pick Tube Snip; the video opens here, ready to download or summarise.
What are credits?
Credits pay for AI work. A transcript costs a few credits and a script blueprint costs more; the table above shows each tool. Downloading never uses credits. Unused monthly credits do not roll over; credit packs never expire.
Is downloading YouTube videos allowed?
Download your own videos and videos you have permission to use. Each result shows the video's license. Creative Commons videos can be reused with credit; standard-license videos need the creator's permission. We remove videos after valid copyright requests.
Which AI models do you use?
We route each tool to the model that does it best, from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Best quality uses a stronger model and costs twice the credits.
