YouTube Video Summarizer: Key Points with Timestamps
Paste a YouTube link and the video summarizer writes a one-line heading and five key points, each starting with the timestamp where it happens. Tap a timestamp to watch just that part, then ask a follow-up question if you need more.
Download only videos you made or have permission to use. Tube Snip shows each video's license so you can check before you reuse it.

How to summarize a YouTube video in 3 steps
- Copy the video link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy link) or the address bar.
- Paste it above, open the AI tab and choose Summary. Pick the language you want under Answer in: a German video can be summarized in English, or the other way round.
- Read the five points. Each one starts with a [m:ss] timestamp that opens the video at that moment. Copy the summary, save it as .txt, or tap Ask a follow-up for more on one point.
A summary costs 5 credits. Without an account you get 3 free AI runs a day; a free account starts with 60 credits.
What you get: an example
Here is the format, shown with an example 25-minute video about building a morning routine:
Building a morning routine that sticks: the short version
- [1:40] Start with one habit, not five. The speaker's first routine failed in a week because it had seven steps.
- [5:12] Tie the new habit to something you already do, like making coffee.
- [9:30] Prepare the night before: clothes, water glass and notebook out.
- [14:05] Track only whether you did it, not how well. A tick is enough.
- [21:48] Missing one day doesn't matter; missing two in a row is where routines die.
Every point comes from the video's own words. The summarizer is told to use only what the transcript says, so it won't fill gaps with general advice the speaker never gave.
Summary, notes or transcript: which one do you need?
| You want | Tool | Length |
|---|---|---|
| To decide if a video is worth watching | Summary (this page) | 5 points |
| To study or revise from it | Study notes | Headings, bullets, quotes, action items |
| Every word, to search or quote | Transcript | The full text with timestamps |
| One specific answer | Ask the video | 1–4 short paragraphs with the moment cited |
They all read the same video, so you can run a summary first and then notes on the one video that turned out to matter.
Where your summary goes
iPhone and iPad
Copy the summary into Notes or a message, Share it straight to another app, or Save .txt to the Files app under Downloads. Timestamps stay as text in your copy; in Tube Snip they open the YouTube app at that moment.
Android
The same buttons: Copy, Share to Keep, Gmail or WhatsApp, and Save .txt to Downloads.
Windows, Mac and Chromebook
Paste the summary into Notion, OneNote, Google Docs or Slack. Timestamps paste as [m:ss], so your team can find the moment in the video.
How do you get a better summary?
A summary is only as good as the words it reads, so a few habits help:
- Check one timestamp before you trust a number. Auto-captions sometimes mishear figures ("fifteen" and "fifty" sound alike); YouTube notes that automatic captions are made by machine learning, so their quality may vary. One tap on the [m:ss] link settles it.
- Ask for what's missing instead of running it again. If point three is the one you care about, tap Ask a follow-up and ask "What exactly does she recommend at 9:30?" The answer cites its moment too.
- Pick the language before you run it. Changing Answer in afterwards means a new run.
- Use Notes for anything you need to remember. Five points are built for deciding and skimming. For an exam or a work summary, study notes keep the structure of the whole video.
- Mind videos with little talking. Music videos, gameplay and silent tutorials have few or no captions, so there's little to summarize. A cooking video where the cook says nothing will give a thin summary however good the video is.
Why a timestamped summary beats a plain one
A plain summary asks you to trust it. A timestamped one lets you check it: every point is a door back into the video. That's the difference between reading "the speaker recommends tracking habits" and hearing her explain it in her own words at 14:05, in ten seconds, without scrubbing through the timeline.
Videos it handles well
- Lectures and tutorials up to several hours long: the summary points to the five moments that matter.
- Podcasts and interviews, where the useful part is often buried in the middle.
- Product reviews: see the verdict and the trade-offs without watching 20 minutes.
- News explainers and talks in a language you don't speak, summarized in one you do.
- Meetings and webinars that were uploaded to YouTube as unlisted videos.
YouTube video summarizers: Tube Snip vs other tools
When we asked Google's AI Overview and Perplexity for the best AI YouTube video summarizer in October 2026, Recall and Google's notebook tool were among those named, and NoteGPT came up for related questions. Each tool's facts below were checked on its own website on 19 October 2026.
| Tool | What it is | Price | Install | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tube Snip | Web app | 5 credits a summary: 3 free runs a day without an account, 60 credits with a free account | Nothing | Five key points, each with a timestamp that jumps to the moment, plus follow-up questions | Uses credits after the free runs |
| NoteGPT | Web app | Free, no login; paid plans | Nothing | Many videos at once (up to 20) with adjustable summary length | Paid plan prices are not shown on its summarizer page |
| Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) | Google research notebook | Free tier (up to 50 sources) | Nothing | Studying several videos and documents together in one notebook | Only public videos with captions; it imports the transcript, not the picture |
| Recall | Web app, browser extensions and phone apps | Free plan with 10 AI summaries a month; Plus $10/month billed yearly | Optional extension | Building a linked library of everything you watch and read | The free plan caps AI summaries each month |
Pick by situation. To decide in a minute whether a video is worth watching, Tube Snip. For a batch of videos, NoteGPT. For research across many sources, Gemini Notebook. For a personal knowledge base, Recall.
More tools for the same video
- Turn the best moment into a clip: the clip cutter saves any section as MP4, GIF or MP3.
- Listen instead of watching: YouTube to MP3 at up to 320 kbps.
- For your own videos: the description generator and timestamp generator use the same reading of the video.
Why a summary fails, and the fix
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "This video has no captions" | No creator captions and no auto-captions | Captions are needed to read the video; try another upload of it |
| The summary is in the wrong language | Answer in was set to another language | Change Answer in and run it again |
| Points feel too general | The video itself is short on specifics | Use Ask the video for the detail you need |
| "We could not read this video's captions" | YouTube refused the request for a moment | Try again; failed runs are not charged |
| "You have used today's 3 free runs" | The guest limit | Make a free account for 60 credits |
Good to know
Summaries are made from the captions of public and unlisted videos, the same text YouTube shows under Show transcript. They are for your own reading and research; if you publish one, credit the video and link to it. Your own videos and Creative Commons videos you can reuse freely.
Questions about this tool
Is the YouTube video summarizer free?
You get 3 free AI runs a day without an account, and a free account starts with 60 credits. A summary costs 5 credits.
How long can the video be?
Long lectures and podcasts work. Very long transcripts are trimmed to a safe length, so on multi-hour videos the summary covers the main part.
Can it summarize videos in other languages?
Yes. Choose one of more than 50 languages under Answer in, and the summary is written in that language whatever the video's language.
Does it work on videos without subtitles?
No. It reads the video's captions, creator-made or auto-generated. A video with no captions at all can't be read.
Are the timestamps clickable?
Yes. Each [m:ss] timestamp opens the video at that exact second.
Can I ask questions about the video?
Yes. Tap Ask a follow-up, or use Ask the video, and the answer cites the moment it comes from.
How accurate are the summaries?
They use only what the video's transcript says. Check any number or name against the linked moment before you rely on it.
Before you download
Why do some downloaders give me HD video with no sound?
In HD, YouTube serves picture and sound as two separate streams. Tube Snip downloads both and joins them, so every file in the Video tab plays with audio.
Can I paste just the video ID?
Yes. Paste the 11 characters after v= and it works the same as a full link. Shorts links, youtu.be links, embed links and links with a start time all work too.
How do I share a video from the YouTube app?
Install Tube Snip from your browser menu ("Add to Home screen" or "Install app"). Then in the YouTube app tap Share and pick Tube Snip; the video opens here, ready to download or summarise.
What are credits?
Credits pay for AI work. A transcript costs a few credits and a script blueprint costs more; the table above shows each tool. Downloading never uses credits. Unused monthly credits do not roll over; credit packs never expire.
Is downloading YouTube videos allowed?
Download your own videos and videos you have permission to use. Each result shows the video's license. Creative Commons videos can be reused with credit; standard-license videos need the creator's permission. We remove videos after valid copyright requests.
Which AI models do you use?
We route each tool to the model that does it best, from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Best quality uses a stronger model and costs twice the credits.
