YouTube Transcript Generator: Clean Text with Timestamps
Paste a YouTube link and the transcript generator gives you every word of the video as clean, readable text: punctuation fixed, filler words removed and a timestamp at the start of each paragraph that jumps to that moment. Copy it, save it, or ask for it in another language.
Download only videos you made or have permission to use. Tube Snip shows each video's license so you can check before you reuse it.

How to get a transcript from a YouTube video in 3 steps
- Copy the video link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy link) or the address bar. A bare video ID works too.
- Paste it above, open the AI tab and choose Transcript. Pick the language you want the text in under Answer in; English is the default.
- Read, copy or save it. Tap Copy to paste it into a doc or ChatGPT, or Save .txt to keep a file. Every timestamp is a link that opens the video at that exact second.
Without an account you get 3 free AI runs a day. A free account starts with 60 credits, and a transcript costs 3 of them.
Which kind of transcript do you need?
YouTube keeps the words of a video in caption tracks. Tube Snip gives you two ways to get them:
| You want | Use | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean text to read, quote or study | AI Transcript (this page) | Full sentences, punctuation fixed, filler like "um" and "you know" removed, a [m:ss] timestamp per paragraph | 3 credits |
| The raw caption track, line by line | Subtitle downloader, TXT format | Every caption line exactly as YouTube has it, no timings | Free |
| A file for a video editor | Subtitle downloader, SRT or VTT | Caption lines with exact start and end times | Free |
Raw auto-captions arrive as short broken lines with no punctuation, which is hard to read and harder to quote. The AI transcript rewrites them into paragraphs while keeping every point the speaker made.
What a clean transcript looks like
Here is an example: 20 seconds of a cooking video, first as raw auto-captions, then after the transcript generator:
Raw captions: "so um today we're gonna make the the dough first you know you want the water warm not hot because hot water kills the yeast and then"
Clean transcript: "[0:12] Today we're going to make the dough first. You want the water warm, not hot, because hot water kills the yeast."
Nothing the cook said is lost: the repeated words and filler are gone, the sentences have full stops, and the [0:12] link takes you back to that moment if you want to hear it again. The difference matters most on long videos, where an hour of raw captions is one wall of lower-case text with no full stops.
How do you see the transcript on YouTube itself?
YouTube has a built-in transcript panel, but it's hidden (YouTube Help: view video transcripts):
- On a computer: under the video, click ...more to open the description, scroll to the end and click Show transcript. The panel opens on the right. You can select the text and copy it, but timestamps and text come out mixed together, one short line at a time.
- In the YouTube app on iPhone or Android: tap the description, scroll down and tap Show transcript.
If there's no Show transcript button, the video has no captions at all, and no tool can read words that were never captioned. Auto-captions also make mistakes: YouTube notes that automatic captions are made by machine learning, so their quality may vary. A generator like this one saves you the copying and cleaning: one paste gives you the full text, already readable.
Where your transcript goes
iPhone and iPad
Copy puts the whole transcript on the clipboard for Notes, Pages or Google Docs. Save .txt downloads a text file to the Files app, in Downloads. Share sends it straight to Mail, Messages or another app.
Android
Copy works the same way. Save .txt goes to your Downloads folder, and Share opens Android's share sheet, so you can send it to Google Keep, Gmail or WhatsApp in one tap.
Windows, Mac and Chromebook
Paste into Word, Google Docs or Notion, or save the .txt to your Downloads folder. Long transcripts paste cleanly into ChatGPT or Claude if you want to ask questions about a lecture.
Transcripts in 50+ languages
The Answer in menu lists English plus more than 50 other languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Indonesian, Arabic, Japanese and German. Choose one before you run the tool and the transcript arrives in that language. It works the other way round too: a Hindi or Spanish video becomes an English transcript. For a subtitle file in another language, with the timing kept, use the subtitle translator.
YouTube transcript generators: Tube Snip vs other tools
When we asked Google's AI Overview and Perplexity for the best YouTube transcript generator in October 2026, they named YouTube's own transcript panel, Tactiq and NoteGPT among others. Each tool's facts below were checked on its own website on 19 October 2026.
| Tool | What it is | Price | Install | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tube Snip | Web app | 3 credits a transcript: 3 free runs a day without an account, 60 credits with a free account | Nothing | Clean paragraphs with punctuation fixed, filler removed and a timestamp per paragraph, in 50+ languages | Uses credits; the raw caption file is free in our subtitle downloader |
| YouTube "Show transcript" | Built into YouTube | Free | Nothing | Reading along and jumping to a line while you watch | Copying gives short lines with timestamps mixed into the text |
| Tactiq | Web tool (also a Chrome extension for meetings) | Free | Nothing | A quick plain-text copy, downloadable as .txt, no email needed | The raw caption text, not cleaned into paragraphs |
| NoteGPT | Web app | Free summarizer and transcripts, no login; paid plans | Nothing | Transcripts plus summaries, up to 20 videos at once | Paid plan prices are not shown on its summarizer page |
Pick by situation. To read along while watching, YouTube's own panel. For a quick raw copy, Tactiq. For a clean transcript you can quote, publish or study, Tube Snip.
Do more with the transcript
The same video, without pasting the link again:
- The short version: an AI summary with five key points, each linked to its moment.
- Study notes: headings, bullets, key quotes and action items from a lecture or course.
- Chapters for your description: the timestamp generator writes "0:00 Intro" lines ready to paste.
- The audio to listen to: YouTube to MP3 at up to 320 kbps.
- Ask the video: type a question and get an answer with the exact moment cited.
Why a transcript fails, and the fix
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "This video has no captions" | The creator uploaded none and YouTube made no auto-captions | Nothing can be transcribed from captions; try another upload of the same talk |
| "We could not read this video's captions" | YouTube refused the request for a moment | Try again in a minute; nothing is charged for a failed run |
| Names or technical words are wrong | Auto-captions mishear rare words | Check the timestamp link and fix the word in your copy |
| The transcript stops early | Very long videos are cut at a safe length | Run Notes or Summary for the whole video instead |
| "You have used today's 3 free runs" | The guest limit | Make a free account for 60 credits |
Who uses it
- Students turn a 90-minute lecture into text they can search and highlight.
- Researchers and journalists quote a speaker word for word and link the exact second.
- Creators turn their own videos into blog posts, newsletters and show notes.
- Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers read a talk at their own pace.
- Language learners read along in the original language, then in their own.
The rules
Transcripts come from the video's public captions. Quoting short parts with credit is common practice; publishing someone else's full transcript as your own content is not. Your own videos, Creative Commons videos and videos you have permission to use are fine to republish.
Questions about this tool
Is this YouTube transcript generator free?
You get 3 free AI runs a day without an account, and a free account starts with 60 credits. A transcript costs 3 credits. The raw caption track is always free in the subtitle downloader.
How do I get a transcript of a YouTube video?
Paste the link above, open the AI tab and choose Transcript. You get the full text with a timestamp at the start of each paragraph, ready to copy or save.
How do I find the transcript on YouTube itself?
Yes. Open the description, scroll to the end and click Show transcript. If the button is missing, the video has no captions.
Does it work on videos without captions?
No. The tool reads the video's caption tracks, creator-made or auto-generated. A video with no captions at all has no words to read.
Can I get the transcript in another language?
Yes. Pick one of more than 50 languages under Answer in before you run it, and the transcript arrives in that language.
Are the timestamps clickable?
Yes. Each [m:ss] timestamp opens the YouTube video at that exact second.
Can I download the transcript as a file?
Yes. Save .txt downloads it as a text file. For SRT or VTT with exact timings, use the subtitle downloader.
Can I use a YouTube transcript in my own content?
Quote short parts with credit. Republish full transcripts only for your own videos, Creative Commons videos or with the owner's permission.
Is this a YouTube transcript extractor?
Yes. It extracts the caption track a video already has, made by the creator or generated by YouTube, and turns it into clean text with timestamps you can copy or download.
Before you download
Why do some downloaders give me HD video with no sound?
In HD, YouTube serves picture and sound as two separate streams. Tube Snip downloads both and joins them, so every file in the Video tab plays with audio.
Can I paste just the video ID?
Yes. Paste the 11 characters after v= and it works the same as a full link. Shorts links, youtu.be links, embed links and links with a start time all work too.
How do I share a video from the YouTube app?
Install Tube Snip from your browser menu ("Add to Home screen" or "Install app"). Then in the YouTube app tap Share and pick Tube Snip; the video opens here, ready to download or summarise.
What are credits?
Credits pay for AI work. A transcript costs a few credits and a script blueprint costs more; the table above shows each tool. Downloading never uses credits. Unused monthly credits do not roll over; credit packs never expire.
Is downloading YouTube videos allowed?
Download your own videos and videos you have permission to use. Each result shows the video's license. Creative Commons videos can be reused with credit; standard-license videos need the creator's permission. We remove videos after valid copyright requests.
Which AI models do you use?
We route each tool to the model that does it best, from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Best quality uses a stronger model and costs twice the credits.
