How to generate YouTube tags in 3 steps

  1. Paste the link to your video above. It can be public or unlisted. For a video you haven't published yet, upload it as Unlisted first and wait until YouTube has made its auto-captions.
  2. Open the AI tab and choose Tags. The tool reads the video's captions, so the tags come from what you actually say, not from a guess at your title.
  3. Copy the tags. Each tag shows as a chip: tap one to copy it alone, or Copy to take the whole comma-separated line. The counter shows how many of YouTube's 500 characters you are using.

A tag run costs 1 credit. Without an account you get 3 free AI runs a day; a free account starts with 60 credits.

How much do tags matter on YouTube?

Less than most tag tools suggest. YouTube's own help page says tags play a minimal role in how people find a video, and are most useful when your topic is often misspelled. Your title, thumbnail, description and the words you speak, which YouTube reads from captions, carry far more weight.

That doesn't make tags useless. They help in three situations:

  • Misspellings and variants: "pho" and "pho soup", "Photoshop" and "photo shop", a creator's name spelled two ways.
  • Ambiguous topics: a video about the Python language versus python snakes. A few specific tags remove the doubt.
  • Long-tail phrases you say in the video but couldn't fit in the title.

So spend two minutes on tags, not twenty. That's what a generator is for.

What a good set of tags looks like

The generator mixes three kinds, because each does a different job:

KindExample for a sourdough videoJob
Broadsourdough, bread bakingPuts the video in the right topic
Specificsourdough starter, no-knead sourdoughMatches what the video really covers
Long-tailhow to make sourdough starter from scratchMatches full questions people type
Variantsour dough, sourdough bread recipeCatches spellings and wordings

Put the most important tag first, keep the list close to the topic and skip tags for things the video doesn't cover. Unrelated tags, like a famous creator's name on a video that isn't about them, break YouTube's spam policy and don't help.

Where to paste the tags

On a computer (YouTube Studio)

Open YouTube Studio → Content, click your video, then Show more at the bottom of the Details page. Paste the line into Tags: YouTube splits it at the commas. Click Save.

iPhone and Android (YouTube Studio app)

Open the video in the YouTube Studio app, tap the pencil to edit, and find Tags. Paste the copied line, then tap Save. On a phone it's easier to copy the whole line once than tag by tag.

When you upload

You can also paste tags on the upload screen, in the Details step under Show more, before you publish.

What is the difference between tags, hashtags and keywords?

  • Tags are hidden. Viewers never see them; only YouTube does.
  • Hashtags (#sourdough) go in your title or description. They are visible and clickable, and YouTube shows up to three of them by the title (YouTube Help on hashtags). More than 60 hashtags and YouTube ignores them all.
  • Keywords are simply the words people search. The best place for your main keyword is the title and the first lines of your description.

For the visible parts, use the title generator and the description generator; both read the same video.

YouTube tag generators: Tube Snip vs other tools

When we asked Google's AI Overview and Perplexity for the best YouTube tag generator in October 2026, RapidTags, vidIQ and Keyword Tool were among the tools they named. TubeBuddy also has tag tools. Each tool's facts below were checked on its own website on 19 October 2026.

The rules

Use the tags for your own videos. Keep them honest: tags that describe something your video doesn't contain can get it limited under YouTube's spam and misleading metadata policies. Want to see how another channel tags its videos? That's fine to study, and copying their exact list won't make your video rank like theirs. If you reuse anyone else's footage in your upload, it must be yours to use: your own, Creative Commons or with permission.

Questions about this tool

Is this YouTube tag generator free?

You get 3 free AI runs a day without an account. A tag run costs 1 credit, and a free account starts with 60 credits.

How many tags should a YouTube video have?

Enough to cover the topic, its variants and common misspellings, usually 5 to 15. YouTube allows 500 characters in total.

Do YouTube tags still matter?

A little. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and help most with misspellings. Titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter far more.

Can I generate tags for a video I haven't published?

Yes. Upload it as Unlisted, wait until YouTube has made its captions, then paste the link here.

Where do I put tags on YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open the video, click Show more on the Details page and paste them into Tags. In the Studio app, edit the video and find Tags.

What is the difference between tags and hashtags?

Tags are hidden and only YouTube sees them. Hashtags go in the title or description, are visible to viewers and can be clicked.

Can I see the tags of another YouTube video?

They are hidden on the page itself. Studying a competitor is fine, but copying their tags will not make your video rank like theirs.

Questions

Before you download

Why do some downloaders give me HD video with no sound?

In HD, YouTube serves picture and sound as two separate streams. Tube Snip downloads both and joins them, so every file in the Video tab plays with audio.

Can I paste just the video ID?

Yes. Paste the 11 characters after v= and it works the same as a full link. Shorts links, youtu.be links, embed links and links with a start time all work too.

How do I share a video from the YouTube app?

Install Tube Snip from your browser menu ("Add to Home screen" or "Install app"). Then in the YouTube app tap Share and pick Tube Snip; the video opens here, ready to download or summarise.

What are credits?

Credits pay for AI work. A transcript costs a few credits and a script blueprint costs more; the table above shows each tool. Downloading never uses credits. Unused monthly credits do not roll over; credit packs never expire.

Is downloading YouTube videos allowed?

Download your own videos and videos you have permission to use. Each result shows the video's license. Creative Commons videos can be reused with credit; standard-license videos need the creator's permission. We remove videos after valid copyright requests.

Which AI models do you use?

We route each tool to the model that does it best, from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Best quality uses a stronger model and costs twice the credits.
